Evidence Technology today announced the completion of video conference installation works in Auckland District Courts that will provide the basis
for audio video links with correctional facilities.
John Abbott, Evidence Technology Country Manager says “the strategy for audio and video conference links between hearing rooms and correctional
facilities has been well considered and the integration points and platforms are now in place at courts we have upgraded in recent years”.
This initiative will bring about improved access to justice form many people and considerable cost savings for Government.
The benefits of AVL initiatives have been widely discussed in the law and justice sector in recent years. While technology is expected to
play an important enabling role, considerable business process transformation is expected to occur at many levels. Notwithstanding, the
scene is set for New Zealand and Australian court technology managers, lead by example and demonstrate to the rest of the world, how simple
concepts executed well can significantly improve the effectiveness of current judicial business processes.
“Technical integration of AVL into modern and legacy courtrooms presents its own challenges” says Ben Paterson, Senior Engineer and Victorian
Practice Manager. Ben and David Walker (Consulting Engineer) have worked extensively designing and integrating video conference systems into
Australian and New Zealand courts in recent years. Ben says “you cannot deal with sub-systems in isolation to one another”. Video conference
systems are integrated with digital signal processing systems, sound reinforcement and courtroom recording services. He says “audio and video
testimony and statements will increasingly become the norm”.
Digitisation of the court environment has opened the door for the next generation of enabling technologies and paves the way for further judicial
business process automation. This includes AVL, telepresence, low cost e-courts and advanced electronic discovery and presentation systems.
Abbott says “these innovations are critical to manage the growing caseload and volume of evidence making its way into todays courtrooms”.
